In 1856 Mr Henry Lee Norris, a business man from America, arrived on Scottish soil in search of a site for his boot producing company. 'Hunter Boot Ltd' (known then as, 'North British Rubber Company') was formed at Castle Silk Mills in Edinburgh and grew to 600 workers by 1875. World War I dramatically boosted the manufacturing of wellington boots when the War Office desired 'Hunter Boot Ltd' to invent a sturdy boot suitable for the conditions in sunken trenches. A total of 1,185,036 pairs of Hunter wellies were created to cope with the Army's demands. For World War II 'Hunter Boot Ltd' was once again called upon to provide large quantities of Hunter Wellies and thigh boots. After WWII boot making had to move to a bigger factory in Heathhall Dumfries, where the company has been situated since, to deal with the rise in demand.
Today, Hunter remains the chosen welly brand for those who like to work hard and play hard. There's a fantastic range of boots to suit welly wearers all over the globe, from the Royal Family to festive-goers, working farmers and landed gentry alike.
